Giuliani: I support the First Amendment right to carry, bear arms

March 27, 2007

During Sean Hannity’s March 23 radio show, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani fielded phone calls from listeners. One caller asked Giuliani to clarify his stance on gun control, to which he replied, “I support the First Amendment right to carry and bear arms.”

Here’s the clip from YouTube:

So Mr. Giuliani, who wants to be the next Commander-in-Chief, cannot discern between the first two Amendments to the U.S. Constitution?

Let’s clarify for him.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Fear not gun owners, Giuliani won’t take away your First Amendment right to bear arms. Your Second Amendment rights, however…

  1. And Rudy was a US Attorney? Oy.

  2. This makes perfect sense when one considers that Giuliani is happy to ignore the first amendment.

  3. Haha, nice one Rudy. When asked for comment Mr. Rudy says, “I plead the 4th.”

  4. @paul . what? right, just because it sounds good in your head doesn’t mean it makes sense.

  5. That’s pretty unfair. I listed to the broadcast, and Giuliani did make the error. But he also referred correctly to the Second Amendment on several occasions. Clearly, he knew the difference. A slip of the tongue does not equal ignorance.

  7. Let me see if I understand Rudy. Does he mean he supported the right to bear arms before he opposed it? Nah, I think he meant to say he opposed the right to bear arms before he supported it. No, I think he meant to say he supported the first ammendment right to SAY he supporte the right to bear arms.

  8. Yeah, it may be a slip of the tongue but anyone who thinks Giuliani is a friend to gun owners is smoking something less than legal. McCain however is not completely pure on the issue either but at least his web site goes well beyond the usual “I support the Second Amendment” tripe that Rommney and Giuliani spew.

  9. Hey, give the guy a break. Remember when bush was talking {censored by admin} about someone and the camera was rolling and I think the phone was still connected to the other party he was talking shit about?
